Judith (Judi) Spencer

Judi loves the outdoors, loves music, loves good food, loves people and building friendships, and adores her two grandchildren. She has worked with the Parkinson's community for over 20 years, beginning with her father, and with the cancer community since 2014, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her speciality is music! She has led vocal song classes for people with neurological disorders, particularly Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers, Dementia, and Stroke. Additionally, she facilitates drum circles - "because the beat of the drum is in each of us, and rhythm touches and moves the soul - plus, it is fun!".

Early Life and Accomplishments

Born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Judi studied voice, piano and percussion under the Royal Conservatory of Music. She continued her music studies at Baylor University, followed by a Master’s Degree in Music Performance and Music Education at Indiana State University, and most recently in 2013, received a Postgraduate Advanced Solo Marimba Diploma from the Royal College of Music in London, UK. Additionally, Judi has a RGM Music & Rhythm Certification, is trained in Drums Alive, and Health Rhythms – all assist with leading singing and multi-modal music specialty classes.

Judi is very passionate about helping others, and has lobbied in both Canada and the United States as a Parkinson’s Advocate. In September 2016, Judith led a World Parkinson’s Choir at the Opening Ceremonies of The World Parkinson’s Congress, (WPC), held in Portland, Oregon. There were over 3500 attendees from more than 50 countries. Judi also helped close the ceremonies, with over 2000 attendees beating the drum.

She will lead the next World Parkinson’s Choir in Kyoto, Japan for the WPC2019.

Judith is a Warrior in Pink, touched by cancer in 2014, and has been cancer-free for 3 years.

A Personal Mission

"Music is the language of the heart, a universal language that speaks to all people, going places where words alone will not penetrate". Judi Spencer

Additionally, Judi believes that the versatility of the drum is endless; it is the heartbeat of mankind. The drum and the drum circle rhythms sing Judith's testimony – joyful, uplifting, and inspiring.
